At the Onofrio Dog Shows, owners and potential buyers from all over the world come to test their skills and knowledge by evaluating purebred dogs. It’s a place where breeds are able to be seen in their natural environments, as well as have their pedigrees verified. In this article, you’ll learn what makes these dog shows so unique.
Breeds at Onofrio Shows
The Onofrio Kennel Club offers a variety of breeds of dogs and cats for viewing at their shows. Visitors can see different types of terriers, hounds, retrievers, bulldogs, mastiffs, shih Tzu’s and many other breeds. The Onofrio club hosts two shows each year – the Spring Show in February and the Fall Show in October.
What is a Onofrio Dog Shows about?
A show is an animal exhibition where different breeds of animals can be seen side-by-side. The purpose of a show is to showcase the different breeds and their abilities.
Why do dogs participate in Onofrio Dog Shows?
Dogs participate in dog shows for many reasons. Some breeds participate because they enjoy the attention, some because they want to win and others because they are bred to perform a specific task, such as Agricultural work or showmanship.
Whatever the reason, dog shows provide a great opportunity to get close to many different types of dogs and learn more about their personalities and breeding. Most importantly, dog shows give dogs a chance to let their hair down and have some fun!
Getting started at a show
If you’re looking to get started showing your dog, Onofrio shows are the perfect place to start. Not only are they well-run and organized, but the competition is stiff, so your pup will have plenty of opportunities to shine. Here’s what you need to know to have the best chance of success at a show:
1. Make sure your dog is properly trained. This doesn’t mean that you need to go overboard with obedience training – in fact, most show dogs aren’t – but your dog needs to be responsive when called and know basic obedience commands such as “sit,” “stay,” and “come.” If your pup isn’t properly trained, it’ll be hard for him to perform well during a show.
2. Get ready to pay attention. Shows are long (usually three hours or more), and most judges look for dogs that are attentive and focused throughout. That means taking breaks only if absolutely necessary, and keeping an eye on your dog at all times. If he starts wandering around or acting out, take corrective action right away – otherwise you’ll likely end up disqualified from the show.
What should I expect on the day of a show?
When you arrive at the show, you will be asked to present your ticket to the guard. Once you have entered, go to the breed judging room and present your dog to the judge. The judging will start around 9:00am and will last until around 12:30pm. There may be breaks for lunch or dinner, but the judging should not last beyond 1:00pm.
After the judging is complete, head back outside and find your dog’s name on a sign next to his/her handler. Bring your dog over to that sign and wait for your number to be called. When it is, walk up to the judge and hand over your certificate of participation. Congratulations! You have just completed one of the most important days in your dog’s career!
Please note: Dogs must be kept on a leash at all times inside the ring (except when they are sleeping) and outside of their owner’s immediate control while in attendance at an Onofrio show.
Italian greyhounds have a natural instinct to hunt, so they excel in conformation competitions, such as the show ring, in which they show off their physique, movement and bearing. They also excel in agility courses, where they must cross obstacles quickly and accurately. And they’re fantastic at obedience trials, where they must respond to commands such as sit, stay and come.
Is there anything to worry about if I have a new dog or an older dog that hasn’t been shown before?
There is nothing to worry about if you have a new dog or an older dog that hasn’t been shown before. The vast majority of dogs is friendly and will get along well with others, even if they haven’t been around others before. If your new dog is young and has never been in a pack before, be sure to take him/her to obedience classes so they can become socialized and learn how to behave around other dogs.
Older dogs may not be as anxious as younger dogs and may be more likely to get along well with others. However, just like with any new animal, it’s always best to check with your veterinarian before bringing a new pet into your home.
